Once a month the Natural History Museum in London is open for extra hours on the last Friday of
the month from 6-10pm with extra events and bars. I'm a big fan of the Natural History Museum, or
as I used to call it when I was little the 'dinosaur museum' – because that was and probably still is
my favourite section of the museum. Since I knew about this and have been dying to go for a while,
it coincided nicely with looking for something different to do for date night other than dinner and
drinks or a film (and had the persuading factor of there's a bar there). Coming straight from my
placement in Harpenden it also worked out more convenient for me to go into central London rather
than trek back home.
First of all I would recommend getting there early. I got the museum when it was still within normal
opening hours (just about at 5:45) but this was probably perfect, it gave the opportunity to walk
around quite leisurely and the bar queues were still pretty short (be prepared the prices are pretty
high, unsurprisingly for London). By the time I left the bar queues were huge and the main entrance
was packed with people, so if like me crowds and spending way too long queuing frustrate you get
there early. I knew I was going to enjoy it as a history lover, and excited for the opportunity to see
the dinosaurs again but to my surprise my boyfriend really enjoyed it -originally agreeing to go over
my excitement. Having the right company is key, because then you can make anything fun and
laugh and joke over the things you see.
I was a little disappointed as not all the sections were open during the late but I was still in there for
a few hours so I guess I can't complain. I didn't pay for the extra event going on as it was an improv
event which neither of us really wanted to see, but there's something different every month so it's
worth checking out what's on before you go.
After leaving the museum it was time for food, I'd suggested a trip to Byron as I'd heard about it but
never been and who doesn't love a good burger. Firstly I ordered the Oreo milkshake which was
most definitely the best part of my meal, it was delicious! I don't get milkshakes very often so when
I do it has to be a really good one and the chocolateyness and chunks of Oreo was the pick me up I
needed. The burger however I have to say was a little disappointing, I opted for The Byron (dry
cure bacon, mature cheddar, shredded iceberg, tomato, red onion and Byron sauce) yes great
toppings for the burger, which I enjoyed it was just the burger itself that was disappointing I've just
had far better elsewhere that were more meaty and flavoursome. Oh well, I guess you have to try
these things to learn and the Oreo milkshake definitely made up for it.
