'You will also find that help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it'
Harry Potter is home for the summer after his eventful first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft
and Wizardry. He has spent much of it in his room alone and not hearing from anyone, this wouldn't
be unusual any other year but he was expecting to hear from his best friends Ron Weasley and
Hermione Grainger, after all Ron had even said he could come stay at his house, it was beginning to
look like he'd be stuck with the Dursleys until it was time to go back to Hogwarts. That is until a
curious creature named Dobby turns up at his aunt and uncles house telling him he must not go back
to school this year. Harry of course refuses and luckily he is saved by Ron and his brothers Fred and
George in a flying Ford Anglia of all things and his summer goes dramatically uphill as he spends
his the rest of his time before heading back to Hogwarts at the Weasley's house. Things are going
almost too well until Harry and Ron can't get through the barrier at Kings Cross, how will they get
to school if they can't board the train... there's only one solution of course, take the flying car. This
is obviously not the best start to their second year at Hogwarts but at least they're back and ready for
another year of magic. However this year is also filled with trouble, when Mrs Norris Filch's cat is
found looking dead in the corridor on the night of Halloween and it doesn't help that Harry is
hearing a strange voice coming from the wall that no-one else can hear... even in the wizarding
world it's not a good sign. It's revealed that the mythical Chamber of Secrets has been opened and
the attacks don't seem to be stopping anytime soon as students at being petrified there's fear that
Hogwarts may have to close if they continue. Harry thinks he's found the answer in a mysterious
diary that has washed up in the girls toilets, but the diary is only the beginning of what he must face
when he enters the Chamber.
Favourite moments/comments:
What I love about all the books, but especially noticed here, is the way Rowling makes it so easy
for the reader to understand what's going on if they haven't read the previous book (I don't know
why on earth you would just dive into the second book of a series) but it's comforting if there's
anything you don't remember that it will explained.
De-gnoming with the Weasleys. I just love the Burrow, it's probably my favourite location in the
wizarding world full of love and laughter and everything Harry missed out on with the Dursleys.
And it's just a great moment of comparison between the muggle and wizarding world.
'Muggles have garden gnomes, too, you know.' Harry told Ron as they crossed the law
'Yeah I've seen those things the think are gnomes,' said Ron bent double with his head in a peony
bush. 'Like fat little Father Christmases with fishing rods...' (A fair description, even as a muggle I
don't understand our garden gnomes'
Harry's first meeting with Mr Weasley, the fact he struggles to tell the boys off and wants to know
how well the car flew and Ron's wizarding comics 'The Adventures of Martin Miggs, the Mad
Muggle' (I love the little touches)
Hermiones letter to the boys, especially her reference to Errol 'will you please let me know at once,
but perhaps it would be better if you used a different owl, because I think another delivery might
finish your one off' poor poor Errol.
Driving the car to Hogwarts 'All we've got to worry about now is the aeroplanes,' said Ron. Even in
some of the worst situations Ron can still crack a joke.. although I think a small part of him is
serious.
Harry and Ron gossiping about Snape from outside the feast only for him to of course sneak up on
and catch them, as well as the fact he refers to them as 'Harry Potter and his faithful sidekick
Weasley'
The fact Ron fixes his wand with Spellotape. Even in the wizarding world tape is a quick fix
solution.
Ron spewing up slugs. The rumour spreading of Harry giving out signed photos... as if he needed to
further endorse his 'celebrity' status (Well he does have competition from Lockhart now).
Nearly Headless Nick's application to the Headless Hunt being declined 'I mean, nobody wishes
more than I do that it has all been quick and clean, and my head had come off properly, I mean, it
would have saved me a great deal of pain and ridicule'
Nearly Headless Nick's deathday party that Ron, Harry and Hermione agree to attend instead of the
Halloween feast
The Hufflepuff's gossiping about Harry after the duelling club, speculating he must be the heir of
Slytherine and the fact he must be a really dark wizard to not be killed by the killing curse.
Christmas at Hogwarts is always one of my favourite things this one includes the trio's first gifts for
each other, Hagrid drinking lashings of eggnog and many games of exploding snap.
Valentines day at Hogwarts, if there's a celebration at Hogwarts its always big. Harry's singing
valentine is the best
'His eyes are green as a fresh pickled toad
His hair is as dark as a blackboard.
I wish he was mine, he's really divine,
The hero who conquered the Dark Lord'
The fact madrakes go through a horny teen stage 'The moment they start trying to move into each
other's pots, we'll know they're fully mature'
The wild car in the forbidden forest that seems to have developed a life of its own since being
crashed into the whomping willow
Fawkes saves the day!
Dumbledore's urgency to send out an advertisment to the Daily Prophet for the new defence against
the dark arts teacher 'Dear me we do seem to run through them, don't we?' hahaha (seriously
Dumbledore this is not a laughing matter, not being able to keep a teacher for that subject for longer
than a year is concerning.'
Finally the fact that all exams for the year are cancelled... basically if you're taking your O.W.L.S or
N.E.W.Ts you're screwed as you have no formal qualifications... or do they just get their predicted
grades. I get the feeling Dumbledore didn't think this through as much as I did.
